Statewide Natural Gas Savings

Residential  energy end use estimates by the CEC show total gas consumption of 4810 million therms and that 45% of this total is for space heating.  The gas used to heat residences is therefore 4810 million therms x 45% = 2160 million therms. Assuming about half a million homes heat with electricity then the remaining 7.5 million homes heat with gas.

Retrofitting the 3 million homes with central air conditioning to achieve a 10% energy saving, would result in a saving of 0.1 x 3/7.5 x 2160 million therms = 90 million therms.  At $2 a therm this translates to about $180 million savings a year.
